Actor Dan Ryan is almost done shooting Passenger, a six-episode dark comic thriller for ITVX, before returning to Morecambe to film The Bay 5.

The thriller produced by the acclaimed SISTER and Northern Sister for ITVX and ITV1 was written by first-time screenwriter Andrew Buchan, famous for his performances in Broadchurch, The Honourable Woman, and Better.

Former Met Police Detective Riya Ajunwa (Bafta-winning actress Wunmi Mosaku), who has been living in the village for five years, has been eagerly searching for that ‘one big crime’ to reignite her passion for detective work. Suddenly, a local girl named Katie Wells disappears under mysterious circumstances, leaving behind her abandoned car with traces of blood. But the village barely has time to register Katie’s disappearance before she reappears the next day, safe and sound.

The other villagers ask a few questions and go on with their daily lives, but for Riya, who doesn’t fully belong in Chadder Vale, something doesn’t feel quite right. Very strange occurrences and horrific crimes start unfolding within the village, and the residents start resorting to short-sighted theories and blaming outside influences.

Riya takes it upon herself to persuade the villagers that there must be more to the situation than their narrow-minded theories. And before long, she is drawn into a universe, unlike anything she has ever seen.

Passenger will be shown on ITVX as an exclusive and later available on ITV1 and BritBox in international markets.

Dan said: “I’m just finishing shooting PASSENGER for ITVX, which will hopefully broadcast later this year, and then it’s straight back to Morecambe for The Bay 5.

“I can’t believe how lucky I am to get to step back into my Manning shoes and back on the set of The Bay to work on these wonderful scripts. It’s a real privilege.“

On Tuesday, ITV confirmed that The Bay will return for another series.

The ITV1 series, filmed in Morecambe, will be back on our screens in 2024, and filming is expected to begin later this year.

Sold in over 140 territories across the world, ITV Studios is responsible for the international distribution of The Bay.

So far, all four series of The Bay are available to stream on ITVX.
